Capacity is limited and available on a first-come\, first-served basis.\nLocation: The Kampong – 4013 South Douglas Rd Coconut Grove\, FL\nSip of History delves into South Florida’s past and present through moderated conversation with artists\, activists\, and community stakeholders from a variety of disciplines. Fairchild and later\, Catherine “Kay” Hauberg Sweeney. The Kampong began not as a botanical garden\, but as a personal collection motivated by Fairchild and Sweeney’s love for\, and scientific interest in\, ornamental\, edible\, and ethnobotanical plants. Today\, the garden is renowned for its irreplaceable historic collections of rare and unusual varieties of tropical and subtropical fruits\, palms\, and flowering trees\, shrubs and vines. The National Tropical Botanical Garden is a not-for-profit\, non-governmental institution with nearly 2\,000 acres of gardens and preserves in Hawai‘i and Florida. The institution’s mission is to enrich life through discovery\, scientific research\, conservation\, and education by perpetuating the survival of plants\, ecosystems\, and cultural knowledge of tropical regions. \nFeatured Speakers: \nDr. Paul George \nFor three decades\, Museum of Miami’s Resident Historian Dr. Paul S. George has toured his way to local\, national\, and international acclaim with his continuing series of historic tours. Through walking\, coach\, and boat tour experiences\, Dr. George has welcomed tour participants on a memorable journey of South Florida through its historic neighborhoods\, landmarks\, and sites. As a Miami native\, author\, and former college professor\, Dr. George has gained fame for his uncanny ability to recall the most impressive details about the people and places that make South Florida so unique. \nMr. Craig Morell \nCraig is a lifelong horticulturist\, starting his love of plants in the 1970s\, growing orchids on the windowsills of his parents’ home in Milwaukee. After reading David Fairchild’s book “Garden Islands of the Great East” as a teenager\, Craig decided to pursue horticulture as a career. Following the trail of a career in horticulture\, Craig attended the University of Florida-Gainesville\, working in nurseries along the path to an education in ornamental horticulture\, as well as apprenticing with a master orchid hybridizer in Gainesville. After graduation\, Craig worked at the Florida Dept. of Agriculture at Chapman Field; a small orchid company in West Palm Beach; 10 years as Horticulturist at the Boca Raton Resort in Boca Raton; and 11 years as Horticulturist at Pinecrest Gardens in Miami. Currently the Director of The Kampong\, Craig calls flowering trees\, palms\, orchids\, bromeliads\, gingers and heliconias his favored groups. \nMr. Angel Gómez \nAngel Gómez\, better known as Angel dla Blanca\, brings more than 10 years of experience in creating cocktails around Latin America and the United States. As a bartender\, he opened many local business franchises by leading themed bars and fine dining events as the capacitador de bartenders. He developed all the creative aspects\, technical\, and audiovisual needs as well as original cocktail menus. Angel has toured countries such as Argentina\, Brazil\, Ecuador\, Colombia looking for flavors and mixtures that generate cocktails with a unique identity. He is originally from Ecuador and has lived in the United States since 2015. Angel dla Blanca is founder of Tremendo Garnish located in the city of Miami. SUMMARY:Conversation: What Is Miami To You?
DESCRIPTION:Via Zoom. Free with registration.\nRegister here to receive Zoom log-in information.\nJoin artists Rosa Naday Garmendia\, Asser Saint-Val\, and Izia Lindsay for an informal conversation about the multifaceted identity of Wall’N Mural Collective and how the ever-changing City of Miami inspired their most recent project. Moderated by Rosie Gordon-Wallace Founder\, Curator\, and Director of Diaspora Vibe Gallery and Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator.\n\nAbout the artists:\n\n\n\nRosa Naday Garmendia is a socially engaged\, multidisciplinary artist working with an array of mediums\, including\, but not limited to; painting\, drawing\, fabric\, collage\, photography\, and site-specific installations.  Her art making process is fed by her experiences as a woman\, an immigrant and an industrial worker\, which have shaped her ideas about injustice.  She is inspired by her personal relationship to colonization and the disrupted genealogies that come forth as a result.  As an artist\, she considers her practice a daily act of resistance. Garmendia\, born in Havana\, Cuba\, immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of 8.  She has pursued her fine art studies at various universities and art institutes\, including University of South Florida\, Parsons School of Design\, University of Miami\, Vermont Studio  Center\,  and  the  Fort  Lauderdale Art Institute. She has exhibited in Miami as well as New York\, Cuba\, Guadeloupe and Suriname.\n\nAsser Saint-Val is a painter\, sculptor and installation artist. His quasi-figurative images\, by turns humorous and grotesque\, bring together ideas\, people and incidents central to modern debates about the definition and valence off Neuromalanin.  Rendered in a blend of traditional art mediums and a wide range  of unconventional\,  organic  materials  —coffee\,  chocolate\,  ginger\,  tea  and  chocolate  among  them—his  pictures\,   objects   and   environments   are   a   surreal   fantasia   on   such   loosely   linked   themes   as  under-recognized  African  American  inventors\,  the  politics  of  sexual  desire\,  and  the  complex aesthetics\,  narratives and metaphors that attach to the organic compounds neuromelanin.\n\nIzia Lindsay is a mixed-media artist from the twin island of Trinidad and Tobago.  He holds an MFA in multimedia from the University of Miami. His artwork addresses symbolism in Caribbean iconography that is rooted in tradition but interpreted with contemporary ideas. Caribbean iconography is used as a basis to create his multi-layered artistic narratives. He uses bold\, geometric shapes that juxtapose and intersperse to form his pieces.  The thematic whole is an epic narrative reproducing the dualities of his turbulent\, cosmopolitan\, Caribbean life. Lindsay has also been working in the creative industry for over ten years and is an adjunct lecturer at the University of Miami and Florida International University.\n\nModerator\n\nRosie Gordon-Wallace is Founder\, Curator\, and Director of Diaspora Vibe Gallery and Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator. Since 1996\, Gordon-Wallace has initiated and produced transnational creative programs that redefine concepts of “diaspora” including the International Cultural Exchange program\, the Caribbean Crossroads Series\, the Artist-In-Residence program\, an ongoing contemporary exhibitions program\, and numerous community-based outreach projects. One might never have guessed that this licensed Medical Microbiologist and former Senior Consultant for Searle Pharmaceuticals from 1981 -1999 is now the founder and senior curator of Diaspora Vibe\, one of the most talked about Caribbean art incubators in Miami and on the east coast. Gordon –Wallace\, always a passionate lover of art\, made up her mind in 1999 to devote herself full time to the gallery she created and developed.\n\n \n\nIn partnership with    \n\n\n\n Open Captioning available during this program.\nAccessibility\nTo request materials in accessible format\, sign language interpreters\, and/or any disability accommodation\, please contact Hana Squires\, Accessibility Coordinator\, at accessibility@museumofmiami.org or call (305) 375-1621 at least two weeks in advance of your visit to initiate your request. Conceived as a “visual love letter” to the woman who founded the City of Miami in 1896\, the mural was designed from a black and white image published in the Miami Herald.  For over a year\, group members were knitting\, stitching\, crocheting\, painting\, and quilting the leaves and flowers that complete Julia’s dress and background.\n\nDuring the celebration you will enjoy complimentary beverages\, light bites\, and music\, as you explore some of the most unique objects in the museum’s collection. The event is FREE with pre-registration: https://bit.ly/opening-210729\n\nThe exhibition is presented with the generous support of Miami Dade County\, State of Florida\, Department of State\, Division of Arts and Culture and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture\, Bermont Gold Wealth Advisory of Raymond James\, Daly Family Foundation\, and Mark Migdal & Hayden.
