During the Mariel Boatlift, approximately 125,000 Cubans left Cuba for south Florida out of Port Mariel, Cuba. The “Marieltos” were placed in refugee camps such as Tent City (located under the 1-95 overpass near the Miami River) in Miami upon arrival.
