Visit The Barnacle, Commodore Ralph Munroe’s home built during the Era of the Bay, and learn about the Coconut Grove Playhouse, a former movie palace turned live theater venue. View architectural delights, including El Jardin and Plymouth Congregational Church.

Resident Historian

For over three decades, Museum of Miami’s Resident Historian Dr. Paul S. George has toured his way to local, national, and international acclaim with his continuing series of historic tours. Through walking, coach, and boat tour experiences, Dr. George has welcomed tour participants on a memorable journey of South Florida through its historic neighborhoods, landmarks, and sites. As a Miami native, author, and former college professor, Dr. George has gained fame for his uncanny ability to recall the most impressive details about the people and places that make South Florida so unique.

The Barnacle Historic State Park

Built in 1891, The Barnacle offers a glimpse of frontier life during the Era of the Bay, when all travel to and from Miami was by sea. Situated on the shore of Biscayne Bay, this was the home of Ralph Middleton Munroe, one of Coconut Grove’s most charming and influential pioneers. Munroe preserved the forest on his land, cutting out only a winding buggy trail through the hammock — barely wide enough for one vehicle. As a result, the property contains many large, old trees. Left in its natural state, The Barnacle Historic State Park appears much as it did in Munroe’s day.

We recommend bringing a water bottle, wearing light clothing, and comfortable shoes for walking. An umbrella is also recommended along with sun protection.
Please meet Museum staff for check-in between 9:30 am – 9:55 am. They will be waiting for you on the sidewalk in front of the entrance to The Barnacle.
There are several parking options available in Coconut Grove.
